Maggie Nelson’s book The Argonauts can be described as a book that has hit its cultural moment, a book that has come just in time. In an age where questioning what society has strict ideas for what is and is not ‘normal’, Nelson’s book is able to not only break down these social constructs, but do so in an unorthodox way. As Nelson undergoes pregnancy, and her partner Harry begins to take testosterone and even receives top surgery, Nelson really questions some of the most controversial topics discussed throughout the world today. By examining the theories of gender, sexuality, and heteronormalcy, Nelson is not only able to question why society has accepted these constructs to be normal, but she is also able to break down these ideas in some very simplistic ways. Through her use of language, structure, and theory, Nelson is able to speak out and reflect on some of the most controversial issues that plague the country. One of the controversial topics that Nelson discusses is gender, and refers to Judith Butler’s Gender Troubles. Though a crime of a very serious nature, both national and international responses to curb the crime have been shown to be suffering from severe deficiencies. The scope and opportunities of human trafficking have increased manifold and it is high time that both national and international efforts become stringent enough to bring down the crime rate. But for doing so some specific strategies have to be developed, and such strategies must be based on several different perspectives, including the perspective of criminal justice, the military perspective, and economic perspectives. Trafficking in persons has been defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2017). Hence, it can be seen that human trafficking is a crime which is based on certain elements, viz. acts, means, and purpose. To identify a crime as the crime of human trafficking, the criminal justice system must prove the act first. The act of human trafficking may consist of recruitment, transportation, transference, harbouring, receiving, giving or receiving benefits, or controlling human subjects (The Three Elements of Human Trafficking, 2014). Then to add to the justification of identifying the crime a s the crime of human trafficking, the criminal justice system has to prove the means which may include the use of violence, threat of violence, use of coercion, abduction, fraudulence, deception, abuse of power or using the advantage of a position of vulnerability (The Three Elements of Human Trafficking, 2014). Finally, to prove an act to be the crime of human trafficking, the criminal justice system has to prove the purpose which may include the purpose of sexual exploitation, the purpose of forced labour, enslavement, servitude, the purpose of removing human organs, or the purpose of forcefully employing the human subject for the purpose of labor or any other service (The Three Elements of Human Trafficking, 2014). Human trafficking has evolved as a serious global crime. In 2012, the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that at least 20.9 million people around the world were imprisoned in the system of forced labour, and out of those 20.9 million people, 9.1 million had actually been trafficked (End Exploitation: National Action Plan, 2014). The ILO, in 2012, reported that more than half of such victims of trafficking were concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region (End Exploitation: National Action Plan, 2014). Considering human trafficking as a global and serious crime many nations have established policies to combat the crime and to alleviate the degree of its occurrence and spread. Australia is among those nations that have strived to respond fruitfully to the crises triggered by the crime of human trafficking. From an international perspective, Australian government has ratified the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) along with its Trafficking Protocol (Australian Government: Attorney-Generals Department, n.d.). The nation has been actively engaged in the war against human trafficking for long, and in this respect it has shown responsibility in collaborating with other nations in combating the heinous crime (Australian Government: Attorney-Generals Department, n.d.). Since the transformation of the crime into a grave one, Australia has been participating in different international forums, including UN Commissions on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the UN Human Rights Councils Universal Periodic Review process, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and the UNTOC Conference of Parties (Australian Government: Attorney-Generals Department, n.d.), and all such participations have been to contribute to the development of international and regional policies for combating the crime of human trafficking. From the regional perspective, Australias efforts have been remarkable in combating the cr ime of human trafficking. In this respect it must be noted that, the country co-chairs the Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime with Indonesia, and in the Asia region, Australia has provided aid projects to fund policies of combating human trafficking (Australian Government: Attorney-Generals Department, n.d.). Moreover, the Australia-Asia Program to Combat Trafficking in Persons has been considered as one of the important efforts of combating the crime of human trafficking (Australian Government: Attorney-Generals Department, n.d.). Also, in respect of the domestic policy of combating the crime of human trafficking, Australian government has established Australias National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking and Slavery 2015-19, and the policy has provided the government with the strategic framework that is needed to effectively response to the problem of human trafficking and slavery within the nation (Australian Government: Attorney-Generals Department, n.d.). But despite all such efforts there are some deficiencies from which the Australian government suffer in terms of combating the menace of human trafficking. The primary deficiency in combating human trafficking in Australia is of economic nature. It has been observed that in Australia the compensatory policies for the victims of human trafficking are not adequate enough to combat the crime (Anti-Slavery Australia, 2016). It must be noted that in Australia, there are currently eight different statutory/territory victims compensation schemes and each have different considerations of categories of harm, relevant time limits, and levels of award applicable (Anti-Slavery Australia, 2016). Such disparities have actually contradicted the efforts rendered by the Australian government to combat human trafficking. Lack of parity in compensatory policies has triggered lack of faith of the victims of trafficking on the Australian government and this in turn h as enhanced the scopes of traffickers to victimize more and more individuals. To overcome this deficiency the Australian government must ensure that the state/territory compensatory policies show parity with each other. Moreover, from the economic perspective, the Australian government must ensure that state and territory compensation schemes are consistent with Commonwealth offences of forced labour and other crimes like forced marriage, debt bondage, etc. (Anti-Slavery Australia, 2016). Also, to overcome the deficiency the Australian government should ensure that the compensatory policies for the victims of human trafficking are at parity with the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act. 32 (Anti-Slavery Australia, 2016). Such parity can alleviate the degree of economic deficiency related to the process of compensating the victims of human trafficking in Australia. Moreover, such parity can help the Australian government is improving its efforts of combating human trafficking as a whole. But though Australia has shown deficiency from the economic perspective in terms of combating human trafficking, the international response to the same problem has shown deficiencies in terms of criminal justice and military perspectives. Efforts of the United Nations to combat human trafficking globally from the legal perspective have not been free from deficiencies. In this respect it must be noted that the present international laws, backed by the UN and other international legal bodies, are not at all sufficient, structurally, to combat modern slavery triggered by human trafficking (CdeBaca, 2011). One must take into account the fact that, If having reporting mechanisms, interministerial meetings, and occasional testimony before a U.N. body were enough, the last sixty years would have seen a burst of freedom, rather than trafficking becoming termed one of the fastest growing transnational crime (CdeBaca, 2011). This particular deficiency from the criminal justice perspective (inc luding the legal perspective) must be addressed particularly through the implementation of stringent international laws and mandates that could be applied universally on every nation in the course of combating human trafficking. It has been observed that still now lack of cooperation among nations in terms of application of international anti-trafficking laws is hindering the global effort of combating the crime fruitfully. And until and unless such non-cooperation is turned into global cooperation, the problem from the criminal justice perspective in combating human trafficking will continue. Hence, it is not only reporting mechanism but mandatory laws that are necessary as international efforts to combat human trafficking globally. Furthermore, from the military perspective, the efforts and response of international organizations like the UN should be termed to be infested with deficiencies. The UN Peacekeepers have failed to combat the crime of human trafficking and sex trafficki ng in many parts of the world, and quite unfortunately such failure has been attributed to unethical practices practiced by many of the Peacekeepers. In this respect it must be noted that in 2011hundreds of Haitians protested against peacekeepers from Uruguay on a United Nations base because many of them were involved in sexually assaulting women (MacFarquhar, 2011). Also, the truth that the UNs military efforts of combating human and sex trafficking has not been a thorough success is evident from the fact that since 2011 the UN has focused serious attention on addressing sexual crimes among the more than 120,000 personnel I has deployed in 16 peacekeeping missions globally, including widespread training (MacFarquhar, 2011). Hence, it can be seen that to transform international military efforts of combating human trafficking into success, more ethical training should be provided to the personnel serving the military wing of the UN. Moreover, lack of cooperation between international military efforts and national military efforts has also contributed to the failure of international response to the crime of human trafficking. In 2011, for instance, when the international military efforts were rendered to alleviate the degree of human trafficking on a global basis, the military regime of Burma failed to cooperate, and this resulted in Burmas utter failure in curbing human trafficking (Radio Free Asia, 2011). It was due to such lack of cooperation that international military efforts failed to stop forced labour and unlawful military conscription of children in Burma throughout 2011 (Radio Free Asia, 2011). Hence, it must be said that to make international military responses a success, international bodies and national governments should ensure that there is cooperation between international and national military forces in terms of combating the menace of human trafficking. In conclusion, the scope and opportunities of human trafficking have increased manifold and it is high time that both national and international efforts become stringent enough to bring down the crime rate. The brain needs to process first as to what type of memory it has gathered before putting it to storage. This is where the idea of memory types emerge. Sensory memory is the initial step in memory which involves a process that hold visual and auditory information in its raw form for a very brief period of time. Examples of these are iconic (visual) and echoic (audio) memory. Thesetypes of memories are being stored for about a quarter of a second or more. Sensory memory prevent s the brain from being overwhelmed from too many incoming stimuli because anything that you do not attend or respond to will vanish in a matter of seconds. Rather than that, it also gives us decision time, stability, playback and recognition. After this process, the brain now determines whether to keep this memory for goof or not. In Mrs Dalloway, the modernist writer Virginia Woolf undermines the usual conventions of prior prose fiction by adopting an innovative approach to time. By this new mode of narration, Woolf gives to the reader the impression of entering the consciousness of the characters. It describes the unorganised flow of thoughts, sensations, and memories that is the time in the mind (or internal time). Characters' memories introduce the element of time. Studying, working or living abroad can be a wonderful experience. However, this can also be an awful time in one’s life with some people finding a lot of discomfort in adapting to a new society. This impact of moving from a familiar culture to one which is unfamiliar is referred to as culture shock. It includes the different feelings and apprehension people have when learning the ways of a different society. This paper looks at this â€Å"occupational disease† as is commonly known. The term ‘culture shock’ was first used by the anthropologist Oberg back in 1960. According to Oberg, there are six main aspects of culture shock. The first is strain, an effect caused by the effort to adapt. Another aspect is a sense of loss and feelings of deprivation in relation to friends, status, profession and possessions. A third common aspect which especially affects people who relocate to a new environment without prior familiarisation with the environment’s culture and way of life is a feeling of rejection by the members of the new culture, or even rejecting the members. Confusion in roles, values and self-identity is another equally significant aspect of culture shock. A certain variety of people may experience anxiety and even disgust or anger about practices they may encounter in their new environment. Last but not least, Oberg identified â€Å"feelings of helplessness†, a case where one may be unable to cope with the new environment. Despite the many negative descriptions that Oberg gave about culture shock, in all its diverse firms, it has been acknowledged as a part of a successful process of adaptation. (Marx, 2001, 5) Culture shock has several stages and the many symptoms known usually occur after the first stage, the honeymoon stage. The honeymoon stage is an excitement stage experienced in the first few weeks of an individual’s relocation to a new environment. The honeymoon stage may last for even months, depending on certain circumstances, such as the person’s popularity. For instance, a well-known person may experience a long honeymoon stage, where he or she may be taken to the show places and given special attention. This experience may not last for long if the person is forced by circumstances to remain in the place for a long period of time. It is then that the person may start having a hostile and aggressive attitude towards the host country, and many symptoms may occur. (World wide classroom, 2008) For example, excessive concern over cleanliness, where one may find the new and strange experiences in-appropriate or plain â€Å"dirty†, especially in relation to drinking water, food and bedding. Another common symptom is a desire for dependence on long term residents of one’s own nationality. Other symptoms such as the fear of physical contact with attendants or servants, irritation over delays and other minor frustrations out of their proportion to their causes, excessive fear of being cheated, robbed or injured, great concern over minor pains and irruptions of the skin, delay and outright refusal to learn the language of the host country; and most significantly, the terrible longing to be in familiar environment, a situation where one would miss one’s relatives and friends. (World wide classroom, 2008) Everyone has been known to be affected by culture shock. Some people adapt quite easily, but others may take years to fully adapt to their new environment. It is therefore critical to understand how to deal with it. Culture shock is unavoidable, despite a person’s status or circumstances. However, various ways have been identified of minimizing it. Some of these steps include, firstly, allowing time to find out about culture shock, which may involve tasks such as reading and carrying out research about the intended place of destination, a step which encompasses learning to recognize the symptoms and their potential impact. Secondly, expecting culture shock to happen is an important step. This should be irrespective of location or distance, as culture shock is likely to occur in a neighbouring country as much as in a far country. The third step is identifying all the opportunities for building support networks with local people as soon as early as possible. Another equally important step to remember is not to give in to any stressful situation. Learning from people who have undergone similar experiences is an invaluable step as someone is able to avoid certain mistakes, hence adapting faster and easier. In some extreme cases, symptoms may persist despite a person’s coping efforts. In such situations, then one is advised to seek professional help through counselors or medical profession. It is critical to remember that reverse culture shock, a situation where the symptoms of culture shock re-occur to people when they get back home is equally normal. Most importantly, is to think about the positive aspects of culture shock; it is worthy noting that people who experience culture shock adapt better than those who do not. (Marx, 2001, 18) According to recent research, the more well-traveled and practiced at absorbing, accepting and adapting one is, the more easily one overcomes culture shock. Good adjustment to a new environment ensures that one competently performs the roles that each social context requires, thus avoiding frustrations resulting from inappropriate behaviour. Firstly, well associated with the spirit of the twelfth night, the night where society reverses roles, Feste reflects joy. His name is a great example of the happiness he expresses. Feste sounds a lot like the French word  «fete », which means party.In every scene he plays in the second act, he starts to sing. He says to Orsino that he takes  «pleasure in singing » which truly proves his delight in what he does. In other words, he is a man that likes his job. But the name Feste associates with the twelfth night in a traditional way too. He is allowed to say whatever he wishes because he is a licensed fool, as we found out when Olivia referred to him as  «an allowed fool ». This freedom of speech fits in well with the reversal of roles involved in the 12th night ritual. When Olivia orders  «take away the fool », he answers  «take away the lady ».This disrespectful answer would have ended the employment of any of the other servants of the lady. But, even considering the fixed hierarchical structure of society at the time, Feste can say whatever he thinks as long as he says it in song or in a comic manner. Moreover, Feste’s job contrasts with his abilities. Since he is a fool, we expect him to be illiterate, certainly not very perspicacious, but on the contrary, he turns out to be the most intelligent character of the play. This is shown by his developed sense of repartee hidden through his role of jester.For example, in the last scene of the first Act, Maria criticizes Feste of having no real bravery, as he pretends to have, compared with soldiers. He answers that everyo ne should do what he is good at ( «And those that are fools, let them use their talent.  »). This response seems wise and philosophical. But Feste as a fool is obviously someone with a great sense of humor. Over five hundred years, many ideas about life and society have changed and evolved, but humor has remained universal. Feste’s talent and ability is to shield himself with his persona as a fool, but to offer insights and insults of a very wise man.He never behaves badly or in a juvenile way: playing around with food, drinks or other accessories. His only accessory is language. Scene 3 of Act 2, Sir Andrew jokes about Feste because of his status but Feste replies:  «How now, my hearts! Did you never see the picture of â€Å"We Three†?  » implying that Sir Andrew, Sir Toby and himself are fools. This short answer is hilarious because Sir Andrew is wordless but the silky tone emphasize the comic feature of the quote. It seems to me that fools like Feste have tw o roles in Shakespeare’s plays.First, they provide comic relief to what might otherwise be a heavy, if not depressing story. We look forward to their appearance to give us an uplift from the more serious developments in the plot. Without the fool this story would have had a totally different tone, simply a depressing tragedy. Second, they are the characters with which we, the audience, identify. Yes, we too are really insightful and we too see all the foibles and vices of the characters and we too would express our thoughts and observations through witty banter if we lived in these social circles in these times, or so we like to think.
